Kansas City, MO, April 27, 2010—Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is pleased to announce plans for another successful Walk at Lunch Day. Approximately 80 of Kansas City's largest companies will participate in this event today, April 28, 2010. Many of the largest employers in the city are all encouraging their employees to take steps to better health during the lunch hour on this day. In its fourth year, this area event is part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's National Walk at Lunch Day initiative, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City has sponsored and participated every year.

Employer groups coordinating the event in conjunction with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City have been pleased with past results of the coordinated effort. This is why this event continues to grow every year, increasing from 40 participating groups in 2008 to 80 this year. Several thousand Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City members, including employees from its own company, will hit the streets to show their support for this initiative.

"We are pleased that so many of our members are becoming personally invested in their health," said Tom Bowser, President and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. "Every person who plans to take part in this city-wide walk is taking personal accountability for his/her own health outcome, which can ultimately help us control rising health care costs."

According to the Mayo Clinic, a simple stroll can reap numerous health benefits. Walking can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol; raise HDL (good) cholesterol; lower blood pressure; reduce the risk or help manage type 2 diabetes; manage your weight; improve your mood and outlook; and much more.
